Lake Powell, June 4th-8th

It has been a few years since I have been to Lake Powell on a boat, and this year it was time again. The last trip was super short due to wind and I was hoping this wasn’t going to happen this year. So we headed down to Bullfrog Monday morning and cruised down the channel to find a spot to camp. Iceburg Canyon was the destination and we found a spot at the back of the canyon. The downside of this spot was it was a pain in the butt to unload the boat up the steep edge. Once we were on top then there were some nice spots to set up our tents. It wasn’t my ideal spot to camp compared to years past cause fishing from shore was off a small cliff and no beach. There were only 2 things I wanted to do on this trip, FISH and take some night pictures. I got both of those done. However I wanted to go crusing for some big Striped Bass. When its not your boat then you get to do what the driver does. That first night was very warm, and I didn’t even pull my sleeping bag out untill 5 am. I just laid there at night thinking to myself this is the most uncomfortable I have been in a tent and thought it would be a rough trip. At least I took a few pictures during the night since I couldn’t sleep. And the 1st night ended up being the worst.

The next day there was a forcast for some wind with 40mph gusts. The day started out calm so we crusied down to the Rhincon area for a bit and battled the waves stirring up. Thoses waves can do some damage even sink your boat when the strong wind hits, so we made it back to our canyon and found some coves to float in for the day. The nice thing about the high cliffs are you can be in the shade most of the day. We found a spot to crusie next to a wall and jig for some Bass while the wind was at its worst. The area we were it didn’t hit to hard but then sometimes a small tornado of water would spray you. It felt great! The best part was the fishing was on FIRE for me…. no my dad. Everytime I would pull up a fish my evil laught came out. I think he got sick of it, cause it happend a lot. I did catch my biggest Small Mouth and Largemouth this day too. So even though the wind was beating up our tents and filling them full of sand, it was a good day.

Wednesday we headed down the channel with the first spot to be Hole in the Rock. Back in April we drove the road to then end and hiked down to the lake. Well I had lost a Go Pro camera in the water from jumping it. It was cold and well it got lost…. So now we were back and I brought some snorkel gear to see if I could be lucky and find it! The water level hadn’t changed much and it was pretty clear. I searched for a while and just enjoyed swimming around. The others were floating in the boat above me and since I could see where the fish were I told them where to cast. I even jigged some line under water while the fish where watching me. I set the hook and my wife reeled in. It was to easy. Unfortuneatly I didn’t find my camera. It might have gone a bit deeper then I could see, or someone else could have found it. I did find some other stuff like sunglasses and bracelets, but not what I wanted.

After here we went down to hike Rainbow Bridge. I have been there many times and last time we had to hike a mile to get there cause the water was so low. This time it wasn’t to bad and only took a few mins to get to it. It always looks the same, clear blue sky, no clouds, the sun shining on the wrong side, but it is still neat to see such a huge bridge. I would love to shoot some night pictures here, but you can’t camp there. After lunch here we went down to Dangling Rope Marina for some ice cream… However their machine was broken! Well we had to cool off the next best way…. jump off the boat in the lake. It felt so good in that water who cared about ice cream.

The last 2 days we just hung around the canyon we were staying at fishing and swimming. It was nice to not have the wind, and great water temps to relax in. I mounted my GoPro camera to my fishing pole to record reeling in a fish, and the only times I used it was when the fishing was slow. At least I caught a Large Mouth when I had it rolling finally. I need to try it again sometime. The sound that it captures is odd in the waterhousing, more the vibrations then anything. This trip was a pretty nice one although not the best camp area it was sad to pack up and start the trek home.

And a video!

  1. That’s pretty awesome! I want to buy a pontoon now so we can go! I would like to snorkle and help look for your camera!
